SESSIONS SUPERVISED BY SAFETY CRAFT (Sailing, wobbly boarding and raft building)

1. Drowning Fatality Wear buoyancy aids. Rescue boat and close supervision by instructor.

Maximum numbers that are permitted on any craft should not be exceeded

including inflatable craft. All passengers to remain seated at all times.

Rescue boat ratios not to exceed:

 1 to 6 sailing dinghies.

 1 to 10 Wobbly boards.

 If used - 1:10 SUP boards.

Safety cover for raft building will be from Canoes manned by BCU FSRT and

BCU 2 star qualified staff. A rescue boat will be available at the Raft build area

for emergency use or where there is a lack of canoe qualified staff.

Note that paddling an improvised raft carries an increased risk of a participant

ending up in the water. Further more they are likely to be surrounded by flotsam.

The ability to swim is an advantage.

Remote Mod

2. Hypothermia Major injury Adequate clothing should be worn. Instructor to monitor participants.

For wobbly boarding all participants should wear wet suits unless conditions are

exceptionally hot.

Consideration will be given to water temperature in relation to activities in colder

months. A wetsuit should be worn for sailing if capsizing is planned.

3. Head injuries Major injury Clients under the age of 18 must wear a helmet. Adults are strongly advised to

wear a helmet. Exception for Access sailing boats as the boom height is such

that a head injury is unlikely.

There is less risk of head injury on wobbly boarding therefore participants don’t

need to wear a helmet.

For sailing sessions instructors should ensure that the sails are reefed and set in

relation to wind strengths and appropriate to the clients’ ability. (including outhaul

and kicker)
